Breakfast on the Beach – Entry 8
Credo. Ashes v. Dust. You choose.
For the last ten years I have had the poem below on or near my desk. As with all interesting things, there is some debate as to the authenticity of the text, but London touches on a point that has been a driving force in my choices for some time.
I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my spark should burn out
in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom
of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
The function of man is to live, not to exist.
I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.
I shall use my time.
Jack London (1876-1916)
Consider for a moment if this is something Christ might say to us:
You should rather be ashes than dust!
You should rather that your spark should burn out
in a brilliant blaze than be stifled by dry-rot.
You should rather be a superb meteor, every atom
in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
I created man to live, not to exist.
I did not waste my days trying to prolong them and neither should you.
I created you to use your time.
